Diabetes Education
The Diabetes Today Program
A program proven to work. Developed by the specialists at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. Tested and continually refined at medical centers across the country. Our group and individual classes will help inspire and empower you to take charge of your health.
We know that everyone learns differently and has unique needs. Our approach to diabetes education is not one-size-fits-all. We start things off right with a personal meeting. Our Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator will meet with you one-on-one to ensure you get the diabetes education you need.

What Will You Learn?
You’ll learn a lot of "news you can use." The Diabetes Today Program is a series of four 1-1/2 to 2 hour classes.
- First Steps:
This is the introduction to diabetes basics. What it is and how it works.
- What Can I Eat:
In this class we explore carbohydrate counting, label reading, portion control, and develop a meal plan that may work for you.
- Foods That Fit:
Here we build upon the knowledge you’ve already developed. We tackle the challenge of eating out, alcohol consumption, and fine tuning your meal plan.
- Exercise Basics:
Working activity into your lifestyle is critically important. We’ll discuss tools for coping with diabetes emotionally and what stressors you can avoid.
Who Teaches?
Classes are taught by our team of diabetes specialists:
Barbara Ruth, BSN, RN, CDE, Diabetes Education Coordinator, has empowered patients to take control of their diabetes for 8+ years. Since being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes herself, Barbara brings her own personal experience to every patient interaction.
Janelle Eligon-Ketchum, RD, LDN, Nutrition Educator, is a registered and licensed Dietitian who knows you are what you eat. Janelle is great at taking complex concepts and making them easy to digest. She is proud of her track record of helping people get their weight in check and reaching goals they never thought possible.
What are Classes Like?
Classes are hands-on and kept small to facilitate conversation. You’ll listen, talk, and take notes. There are no tests and no pressure. You’ll learn as much from your classmates as you will from your educators.
