Temple University Hospital – Northeastern Ambulatory Care Campus announced its affiliation with the Boston-based Joslin Diabetes Center, the world's preeminent diabetes research and clinical care organization. The Joslin Diabetes Center, Affiliate at Temple University Hospital will offer comprehensive community-based care, for treating diabetes and its complications, as well as patient and family diabetes education and support services.
"Thousands of people in the Philadelphia region suffer from diabetes and a third of them don't know they have the disease," said Janice Murphy, Director of National Affiliated Programs at Joslin Diabetes Center. "We look forward to working with the professionals at TUH – Northeastern Ambulatory Care Campus to bring Joslin's integrated, state-of-the-art care to people with diabetes and related conditions in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas."
About the New Affiliate
The Joslin Diabetes Center, Affiliate at Temple University Hospital offers diabetes education, diagnosis, treatment and support services. This multidisciplinary program will be led by H. Howard Goldstein, MD, a diabetes specialist. Dr. Goldstein comes to Temple from the Robert Wood Johnson Diabetes & Endocrinology Group in Hamilton, NJ. He has a long history with the Joslin organization, having completed his Fellowship in Diabetes at the Joslin Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts in 1965.
Over the years he has worked both at the Joslin Clinic in Boston and with the Joslin Diabetes Center in Princeton, NJ. Dr. Goldstein received his medical degree from the State University of New York–Buffalo in 1961.
The multidisciplinary team also includes a registered nurse who is a Certified Diabetes Educator, a registered dietitian, and access to psychosocial support to help address the required lifestyle changes.
Temple University School of Medicine's Department of Medicine boasts a robust Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism section led by Kevin J. Williams, MD, professor of Medicine and chief of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Temple offers comprehensive specialty services that are often needed by patients with diabetes, including a new Limb Salvage Center, which specializes in treating patients with diabetes with peripheral vascular problems or ischemia that are at high risk of amputation.
